What is the Department of Intermedia Art and Science?
The Department of Intermedia Art and Science was newly established in April 2007 at the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University. The idea of newly establishing an area of study as "Intermedia Art and Science" originated in a challenge to address new social needs and create values through the fusion of technology and art. It is expected that new cultures and industries will be created by the development of the recent media technology while various issues associated with the development, such as a lack of quality and quantity of contents and incompatibility with human bodies, are surfaced. In order to solve those issues and review lifestyles and social systems that take advantage of the next generation media, it is necessary to understand and represent characteristics of human bodies, sensibility and communication through technology, as well as considering what technology that support those understanding and representation should be. Based on the above recognition, the Department of Intermedia Art and Science aims to train human resources and establish a field of study that can respond to new social needs and attempt to create values through the fusion of technology and art.
